Paving On Ia. Hwy 4 North Of Central Ave. In Estherville To Start Next Week

November 09, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Estherville)– Crews working on the Highway 4 project in Estherville are thankful for the nice weather so far, and they’re hoping it sticks around yet for awhile. City Administrator Penny Clayton told the city council earlier this week that as of then, plans were to start paving north of Highway 9, or Central Avenue, next week…

“Their plan is to be paving the mainline from 5th Avenue down to Central next Tuesday. So they’ll do that 31 feet wide, so it will be integral curb and gutter from 5th down to 1st, which means they’ll pour the gutter and the street all at the same time, the whole thing, for those four blocks. Then in the block between Central and 1st they’ll pave 31 feet wide but they have those two auxiliary lanes that will have to be paved at the curb and back, so the mainline paving would be set for Tuesday next week, barring any unforeseen weather conditions.”

Clayton also told the council it’s her understanding work on the project is going to continue at least a while longer yet this fall as long as the weather holds…

“They do have a plan for how they would open it if they don’t get the remainder of the work done. We’re pretty confident based on the weather schedule that they should get the mainline work, but we don’t know how long that’s going to last and how far they’ll get with all of the intersections and the driveways and those types of things, so. But there is a plan on how that could be open all winter.”

Highway 4 on the city’s south side re-opened to traffic several weeks ago.
