February 07, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– The owner of the building heavily damaged in that fire last month in downtown Spencer is expressing his gratitude to firefighters and others who helped out. Don Hemphill, who also serves as Spencer’s City Attorney, expressed his appreciation during Monday’s Spencer City Council meeting…

“Particularly the fire department, the police department, Clay County Emergency Management, Red Cross was there almost immediately, the Spirit Lake Fire Department, Spencer Main Street, Spencer Chamber, Public Works Department was involved, Clay County General Relief is helping with the tenants, there have been some fundraisers, the Girl Scouts chapter is helping. Williams and Company has provided some meeting space, Spencer Hospital was on the scene, and neighbors like Weasey’s who were feeding the firemen and the others that were there fighting that blaze in the cold.”

Hemphill’s law office was also impacted by the fire. He says he was able to reopen his firm later that same week courtesy of a nearby business that had some available space.
