(Lakefield, Mn.)– The Jackson County Pork Producers will hold their annual Pork Chop Open Golf Tournament Thursday. Event organizer Jim Nesseth says it’s one of the longest standing ag-related events in the region…
“We started this back in the ’70’s. I believe this is our 48th annual Pork Chop Open event and I think it’s one of the longest commodity-run golf tournaments in the tri-state area. The focus has been to promote pork and I think they’ve done that. They have some great pork patties for the noon lunches; we’ve got some grilling and ribs during the day. New Fashion Pork will be grilling also and then in the evening we have our pork chop supper. We have a bunch of committee members that help grill that. So it’s plenty of food and refreshments and just a good time out. We have about 320 golfers signed up for it.”
Nesseth recalls how the event got its start…
“It was just a group of pork producers in Jackson county and a couple of those guys are on the state pork board and it was just an idea to try to maybe promote pork and get both industry people and pork producers together and the public, you know, to just promote pork. It’s been a long time running and it’s just been very successful.”
Thursday’s event will be held at the Loon Lake Golf Course, just north of the Iowa-Minnesota border.
