(Okoboji)-The Okoboji Writer’s Retreat will return to The Iowa Great Lakes next month. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:
The Okoboji Writer’s Retreat will be held at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory September 18-20.
Founder Julie Gammack says, the retreat is open to novices and professionals. “I survey people ahead of time to see where they put themselves on a scale of one to ten, one being a hobbyist, ten being a published writer. It’s split right down the middle. We have many published authors, but we have a lot of people who want to get around to writing a memoir or they’ve always had this idea for a novel in the back of their head, but they’ve never had the guts to actually start it. So, about half the participants are hobbyists and the other half have some level of professional experience.”
She notes that professional writers will share their knowledge at the retreat. “We have columnists from The Des Moines Register, The Cedar Rapids Gazette, The New York Times. We have authors from around the country. We have editors who were big time editors with newspapers around the country, all of whom are coming because they believe in storytelling, they believe in the power of storytelling, and they really are there to help people.”
