Okoboji Community Schools Gathering Petition Signatures For Bond Election; Purchases Land For Possible New Elementary

July 24, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Milford)– The Okoboji Community School District continues to gather signatures for a petition to put a $69 million measure on the ballot for a new elementary school and for some remodeling and additions at the high school. Superintendent Todd Abrahamson says they need to have roughly a thousand signatures to bring the measure to the voters November 5th…

“We have volunteers gathering signatures right now. We have to have signatures gathered. We need about a thousand signatures so we can then put the language on the ballot for the November 5th election. Then we have to have that turned in to the county on or before August 28th. Since it’s a general election they pushed those time requirements up because they have to get absentee ballots overseas to voters. So our first mission is to get the signatures so we can then have this on the ballot so voters can decide, so.”

Petitions can be signed at Blink Marketing, the Arnolds Park Public Library, ReMax and SAPS of OAKaboji.

Abrahamson adds the bond issue is intended to be “tax neutral”, adding the increase in the district’s valuations will offset any impact to taxpayers.

When it comes to a location for a new elementary school, Abrahamson says the district is purchasing 30 acres of land near the intersection of County Road A-34 and 213th Avenue…

“The city of Milford has run utilities down A-34 to that intersection. That made it really attractive so we can just hook up wherever we plot that school on the 30 acres on that farm ground.”

Abrahamson also gave an update on the construction of a new transportation facility that has been plagued over the years with numerous delays. He says they’re confident those issues have been resolved.
