Okoboji City Council To Resume Public Hearing On Proposed Zoning Amendment For Campgrounds

August 05, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Okoboji)– The city of Okoboji continues to look into tightening a zoning requirement for campgrounds. City Administrator Michael Meyers says a public hearing on the matter was held during a special city council meeting earlier this week and will be taken up again at a regular session scheduled for Tuesday…

“The proposal at hand here is to move visitor habitation campgrounds from a permitted principal use in our C-1 Commercial Zoning District into a conditional use within the same zoning district. So on Monday of this week the council met and opened the public hearing to take comments on that. Now we did keep the public hearing open, so the public hearing is still open and we will pick it up again on Tuesday of next week. So no action was taken at this meeting at this time so they’ll reconvene next Tuesday and presumably take action at that point.”

Okoboji is among a growing number of cities in the lakes area looking at tightening zoning requirements for campgrounds and RV parks. The Orleans City Council Monday is expected to forward a similar request to that city’s Planning and Zoning Commission.
