Okoboji City Council Looking At Possible Sanitary Sewer Project On North Side Of Smith’s Bay

February 12, 2026

(Okoboji)– There was more discussion on a possible sanitary sewer improvement project on the north side of Smith’s Bay at Tuesday’s Okoboji City Council meeting. City Administrator Michael Meyers says they’ve been in talks with the Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District…

What we have is approximately 850 foot of pipe that is right in the lake shore of Smith’s Bay right there. The council’s direction is that they’re moving forward towards abandoning that piece of pipe and what that would involve would be a lift station just to the west of Highway 71 and that would allow the city to abandon that pipe and just kind of proceed forward with a new system there. We’re working with that, we’re working with the Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District on that as well and just trying to see what would be best for this area moving forward.”

Meyers says no timeline for the project has been established yet…

There’s a lot of moving parts that we still need to get figured out, both from a financial and design aspect of it. Certainly given the development in this area, now is really an opportune time in trying to move efficiently as we possibly can with this project.”

Meyers says the city will likely set aside some money for the project in the upcoming fiscal year budget, which is still being finalized.
