Okoboji City Council Hears Concerns Over Noise, Traffic, Construction On Lakeshore Drive

July 09, 2025

(Okoboji)– The Okoboji City Council Tuesday heard ongoing concerns over traffic, noise, construction and other issues along Lakeshore Drive. Police Chief Jason Peterson is urging motorists to abide by ordinances regulating those things…

“Make sure that traffic moving through on Lakeshore Drive is able to pass where the cars are parked. There’s no parking the entirety of Lakeshore Drive on the lake side of Lakeshore Drive.”

Peterson says unattended trailers have also been a concern…

“We have an ordinance forbidding unattended trailers, so if a trailer is unhooked from the vehicle, it cannot be parked along the street, with one exception if there is construction or a work site going on, a worker could leave their trailer on the street while they’re working but at the end of the work day that trailer would have to be removed.”

Peterson adds Lakeshore Drive is also a popular place for bikers and runners…

“Motorists coming through on Lakeshore Drive, use caution because there’s lots of pedestrian traffic, a lot of bicycle traffic, several children. There’s golf carts that are legal to drive on the streets, use caution around there and drive sensibly.”

To address the concerns, Peterson says officers will be stepping up patrols and enforcement of ordinances.

Other concerns over noise and disruptions from construction, were also brought up at Tuesday’s meeting. City officials say the Planning and Zoning Commission will look into that to see if there’s any new revisions that could be included in those ordinances.
