Okoboji City Council Approves Engineering Agreements For Several Capital Projects

June 14, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Okoboji)– The Okoboji City Council Tuesday approved engineering agreements for several upcoming projects. City Administrator Michael Meyers says one of those is for a new playground at Speier Park…

“I think one of the more important themes that came out of these conversations was maintaining the quiet, off the beaten path aspect that Speier Park is and that we all love it for. And so what we have is a design that’s an aviation theme and it’s very modern and aesthetically it’s very pleasing and it’s really a modern version of what’s there now and super excited to share with the community and get input from it.”

Meyers says groundwork and installation of the equipment could take place yet this fall, but he says it likely won’t be until next spring.

He adds engineering on two more big projects will also soon be underway…

“One is engineering to do a overlay of Stakeout Road. It’s been many, many years since that road had any sort of attention like that to it, so we’re looking at doing the engineering in fiscal ’24 and the possible construction in fiscal ’25. Maybe a little bit more interesting to those out there is a potential recreational trail extending from Highway 71 up Sanborn Avenue connecting into Speier Park. That’s something residents talk about very regularly, so the city has approved the engineering for it to do the design work for it. Just an important piece of public safety to get people off of Sanborn: pedestrians, cyclists, etcetera, to make that road safe for everyone to use it.”

The trail project has an estimated cost of roughly $700,000.

The Stakeout Road project is scheduled for construction in the 2025 fiscal year. Meyers says the trail project could also be constructed at that time, but he says that will be dependent upon the availability of funds. Otherwise that could be delayed another year or so.
