(Milford)– Okoboji-Spirit Lake debaters won their home tournament sweepstakes trophy, along with 13 other trophies, at a tournament they hosted this past Friday and Saturday.
Okoboji-Spirit Lake had two teams finish undefeated in Public Forum debate. Connor Ave and Jackson Ave finished 2nd and Maggie Rohlk and Abby Shew 3rd due to the tie breakers.
Sara Mayer and Erin Richey finished with a 3-1 record and the 4th place trophy, and Nick O’Brien and Jordan Hanson earned the 6th place trophy.
Jack and Connor also competed in Extemporaneous Speaking where they finished 2nd and 3rd in their respective divisions.
Okoboji-Spirit Lake managed to win trophies in all five divisions of debate on Saturday. Sara Mayer and Jordan Hanson ended preliminary rounds as the only 5-0 team and the number 1 seed, but lost to Waukee in the final round. Hanson was the tournament’s second top speaker earning 89 out of a possible 90 speaker points.
In Novice Public Forum debate, Clare Huntress and Erin Richey were the only undefeated team and took home the first place trophy. Also placing for OSL was the team of Haley Bushee and Miranda Johnson who were 3-2 and placed 6th.
In varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate, Abbie Shew led OSL with a 2nd place finish and Jack Ave finished 4th.
In novice Lincoln-Douglas, Clare Eckard, Casey Daws and Keaton Jones all earned trophies for OSL.
Margaret Delaney and Katie Delaney broke into the top house after preliminary legislative debate. Delaney finished in 6th place earning the final trophy.
