November 21, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Clay county authorities say a single vehicle crash last week that seriously injured one person was alcohol-related.

The Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to a single vehicle crash shortly before midnight November 15th. It was determined 59-year-old Steven Hoogeterp of Spencer had been driving a truck eastbound in the 2300 mile of Highway 18 when he lost control of the vehicle. It went into the south ditch and over some smaller trees before hitting a larger one.

Hoogeterp and a passenger were taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital. The passenger was then transferred to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Upon being released from the hospital, Hoogeterp was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated…1st offense, failure to maintain control, open container and failure to maintain a seatbelt. A press release states that due to medical concerns, Hoogeterp was released with a court date.
