Officials Release Name Of Student Who Lost Consciousness And Died Friday After Climbing ILCC Wind Turbine

November 22, 2014

(Estherville)– Officials have released the name of a student who lost consciousness while climbing the Iowa Lakes Community College wind turbine Friday and later died.

He’s identified as 59-year-old Robert May of Newton.

May passed away Friday at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville after being transported there from the scene by medical personnel.

A commemorative ceremony for May will be held Tuesday (Sept. 1st) afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at the base of the turbine at the Estherville campus. The observance will include comments from Darin Moeller, Executive Dean of the Estherville campus. College President Valerie Newhouse will also be on hand.

A contingent of Iowa Community College faculty and wind energy students will attend a funeral service for May Tuesday (Sept. 1st) evening in Newton.

The turbine has been out of operation since Friday in May’s honor. College officials say it will be put back in operation on Wednesday (Sept. 2nd).

Plans call for a plaque to be placed inside the entrance of the turbine at a later date to honor May.
