(Spencer)– The investigation into a fire in January that damaged several apartments and businesses in downtown Spencer has now been closed, with no cause being determined.
The January 22nd blaze broke out in a building at 215 Grand Avenue which housed five businesses on the ground level and eight apartments on the upper level. Investigators with the Iowa Department of Public Safety say the fire started in apartment five, but the extent of the destruction prevented a thorough examination into a cause.
While the investigation has been closed, officials say it could be reopened in the event some new evidence comes to light.
Three people were treated for smoke inhalation as a result of the fire. They were all later released.
