(Jackson, Mn.)– The month of October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Kari Voss-Drost is Assistant Director of the Southwest Crisis Center serving Cottonwood and Jackson counties. She says domestic violence can come in a variety of forms…
“A lot of times people will think about the physical violence which is easier to recognize, but there is a lot of other dynamics about domestic violence. Power and control is the main thing and that can come in the form of physical violence, it can come in the form of manipulation, control, controlling who a person sees, who they talk to, erasing messages so that that person never gets to see them and isolating a victim in that way.”
Purple ribbons have been tied around street light poles on Main Street in Jackson to mark the commemoration. In addition, Lanee Hall, an Adult Advocate for Cottonwood and Jackson counties, says a domestic violence homicide memorial is on display through the end of the month at the Jackson Campus of Minnesota West Technical College…
“There’s 24 confirmed victims of domestic violence homicide in the state of Minnesota for the year of 2024, so we have a memorial set up for each one of those victims. They are on display with their name, picture, and a little bit of their story.”
Everyone is encouraged to wear purple this coming Thursday, October 16th, to also help bring awareness to domestic violence.
