NW Iowa plane crash victim identified

A South Dakota pilot who died in the crash of a small plane in northwest Iowa has been identified as a Sioux Falls doctor.

Lyon County authorities say 57-year-old Robert Akins died Wednesday afternoon after his plane crashed and flipped while attempting a landing at an airport near Larchwood, Iowa. Akins was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Akin’s aircraft was registered with the FAA as a homemade experimental plane. The FAA began an investigation on Thursday.
