NW Iowa Man Pleads Guilty To Sex Offender Registration Violation

May 20, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Rock Rapids)– A Rock Rapids man has pleaded guilty to failure to register as a sex offender. 31-year-old Melvin Geovani Aguilar-Lopez entered the plea to one count of the charge during an appearance Friday in U.S. District Court in Sioux City.

As part of a plea deal, Aguilar-Lopez admitted he knew he needed to update his sex offender registration to reflect the fact he had been living in Rock Rapids for about five months and had been working in Lyon county for about two months.

Sentencing is pending completion of a pre-sentence report. Aguilar-Lopez remains in the custody of a U.S. Marshal in the meantime.

He faces a prison term of 15 to 21 months, a $250,000 fine and five years of supervised release following an imprisonment.
