North “Y” Crash Injures Two

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A three-vehicle collision late this (Friday) morning at the north intersection of Highways 18 and 71, or the north “Y” on the north edge of Spencer, sent two people to the hospital.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says 20-year-old Jason Opperman of Manning was driving a pickup pulling a trailer loaded with a boat southbound on Highway 71 when a vehicle driven by 92-year-old Elva Dau of Hartley turned in front of him. Authorities say Opperman’s pickup then spun out of control, with its boat and trailer colliding with a car driven by 52-year-old Karen Postma of Paullina. Authorities say the boat then came off the trailer, landing more than 100 feet away.

Dau and Postma were both taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital. There was no immediate word on the extent of their injuries or condition. No other injuries were reported.

A 2006 Chevrolet pickup driven by Opperman and a 2001 Crownline boat it was pulling were both totaled; as was a 2,000 Dodge Stratus driven by Dau. A 2000 Buick Century driven by Postma sustained an estimated $2,500 in damage.

Dau was cited with failure to yield upon making a left turn; Postma was cited for failure to prove security against liability.
