Dickinson County Has New Tool To Collect Outstanding Property Taxes/Assessments

November 19, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Dickinson county officials now have a new tool available to collect from those who have outstanding debts, such as property taxes or assessments that haven’t been paid. County Treasurer Kris Rowley says the “Offset Program” is being made available through the state of Iowa. She says it replaces an existing program and that counties have to apply to the state to be able to participate in it…

“If somebody wins the lottery or has casino winnings or has like an income tax refund coming back to them, and they owe us money here for delinquent taxes and they have not paid attention or been able to pay them in the past for whatever reason, then this program will hold the money and then notify them it’s being held, they either need to come in and pay it to the Treasurer or the Sheriff or whoever’s involved with it, or they send us the money directly from their winnings or their refunds or they send us the money directly from their winnings or their refunds. So this is the new design of the program.”

The Board of Supervisors this (Wed.) morning adopted a resolution approving the county’s participation in the program, which also allows the county to charge a seven dollar administrative fee.
