(Emmetsburg)– Area authorities are making the public aware of another phone scam that’s making the rounds.
The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office says it’s received reports from mainly older residents of that county stating they’ve received phone calls from someone purporting to be with the Social Security Administration seeking bank account and other personal information. The recipient of the call is warned that if they don’t cooperate, they will no longer be eligible for Social Security.
Authorities say the calls are a scam, adding that the Social Security Administration does not gather personal information over the telephone. They again remind everyone to never give personal information to anyone whom you don’t know—especially on the phone or internet.
Anyone receiving such a call should hang up and report it to their local law enforcement agency.
