New Study Shows Ongoing Concern Over Iowa’s “Brain Drain”

April 04, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Des Moines)– A survey of Iowa businesses finds economic optimism, however Joe Murphy of the Iowa Business Council, which conducted the survey, says there are also concerns about “brain drain”…

“One of the things that we’re tracking and beginning to track more from a micro perspective is the amount of younger people that are leaving Iowa. We know that we are losing more college educated students right out of college.”

Murphy says that, in turn, is having a negative impact on the labor pool…

“Since the start of this year we’re down by about 11,000 or so for the last year and that’s obviously something that concerns us.”

He says businesses would love to convince new college grads, to start their career in Iowa.
