(Des Moines)– State officials are sounding the alarm about a new scam targeting EBT cards used for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.
Officials with the Iowa Attorney General’s Office and Iowa Department of Health and Human Services say they’ve received reports from some recipients getting text messages indicating their cards are locked. It includes a phone number to call for assistance. Officials say HHS did NOT send the message and that you should not share your card number or PIN number with anyone.
They add that government agencies will never request your personal information by text message.
Officials say you should contact law enforcement if you think you’ve been victimized.
