November 22, 2014

(Emmetsburg)– The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office says it’s received reports of a new so-called “phishing” scam. Such scams are knwon for attempting to obtain people’s personal information, such as bank account numbers.

Such scams typically target the elderly. But officials say people of all ages have reported getting calls on this one, include a deputy with the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office.

In this case the caller tells the person on the other end of the line that his or her credit or debit card has been locked, frozen or compromised, and that you need to enter your account information to re-activate it.

In this case, the deputy said he didn’t have an account with the company and simply hung up. He’s advising anyone else getting such calls to do the same.

If you have concern over your bank account or credit card, you should call the bank or credit card company direct.
