(Emmetsburg)– A new scam is apparently making the rounds in the region.
The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office says it’s had reports of people getting a phone call from someone saying the Sheriff’s Office would be stopping by their residence to serve a subpoena and was wanting to verify personal information.
Authorities say one resident in Palo Alto county that received such a call actually gave out personal information, including their Social Security number. The victim has been told to contact the Social Security Office, credit card companies and any financial institutions they’re affiliated with.
The Palo Alto County and other Sheriff’s Offices advise residents NOT to give out any personal information over the phone or internet.
Officials with various local law enforcement agencies add they do not make phone calls to verify any personal information prior to serving a subpoena.
Anyone who receives such a call should report it to their local law enforcement agency.
