Jackson County Central Schools has hired an interim Superintendent who has been on the job since July 1st. Dr. Mike Neubeck, who was Superintendent at Byron schools, is excited to be at JCC.
“My goal is JCC has a great reputation for supporting their kids and supporting their schools and athletics is one thing you know and I know they are very successful and I”m looking forward to that. They also have some great things going on in the classroom.”
Neubeck says he is impressed with the facilities and the district as a whole.
“This high school is awesome. I toured the middle school with Mr. Naumann the other day and that’s an awesome facility. We have some upgrades to do in some other buildings at times but I think you know JCC has the right things for the kids here.”
Neubeck’s resignation from Byron schools came amidst increased scrutiny due to the district’s finances. Byron has been in a budget crisis since the spring of 2025 when the former finance director miscalculated the numbers therefore leaving the district with close to $2 million to cut out of their budget. Although Neubeck was not directly at fault he took responsibility and agreed to leave the Byron district so they could find someone new. He says he learned a lot from the situation.
“Even with the you know 3 years under my belt, I trusted people and that’s what I learned is you still trust people but you ask the right questions and you make sure you know so you can tell other people and so forth and I learned a lot about school finances cause we ended up having some interim finance people in the meantime and so I ran all the bank stuff, I was transferring money, I was more into looking at the reports and so forth and things that I’ve been told by other Superintendents I don’t do that, you know I don’t do that but I ended up doing that. I learned a lot and to be able to do some more projections. I think the other thing we didn’t do because the person that we had was a half time person at the time, we didn’t do a good job of forecasting. What does the next 2 to 3 years look like and how does that affect our budget so I’ve learned that a lot and we’re working on that now as we look at a possible referendum for JCC in the future so we’ve spent a lot of time forecasting.”
Dr. Neubeck agreed to a one year interim contract that includes early opt out clauses. Barry Schmidt, former JCC Superintendent took a job with the Pine Island School district and his last day at JCC was June 30th.
