New Housing Development May Be In The Works For Spirit Lake

(Spirit Lake)– A substantial housing project may be in the works for the southwest side of the city of Spirit Lake. The city council Tuesday evening scheduled a public hearing to re-zone some land in that area that would pave the way for the project. City Attorney/Administrator Gregg Owens says the land is south of the Tall Grass apartment building along Sunner Avenue, then west along 175th Street to Highway 71…
“Part of that’s already zoned R-3. They want to zone the rest of it R-3 from ag, which sooner or later that’s going to be something other than ag. So the proposal hasn’t been finalized, we haven’t seen anything formal yet, but our understanding is that it would be a condominium-type housing development with slab-on-grade homes.”
Owens says it’s his understanding the development would consist of some 70 to 80 units. He says it would further the city’s commitment to fill a vital need for additional housing in the area…
“And two of the things I’m always happy to mention that spurred us with a lot of our housing has been Lee Seaman’s involvement in Berkley Place and now his investment in that housing out there or at least making land available; and of course Steve Booty and his people investing in that whole area near the Y, that Tall Grass development for apartments, which we needed and almost magically they appeared. We satisfied our stated demand for housing three times over in about two years. So we’ve been really lucky and the housing market here as you know continues to be really strong.”
The public hearing on the re-zoning is set for the Spirit Lake City Council’s next regular meeting on May 24th.
