Natural Gas Leak Results In Evacuation Of Okoboji Neighborhood

November 22, 2014

(Okoboji)– A natural gas leak this (Tues.) morning resulted in a neighborhood in Okoboji being evacuated for awhile.

Jim Hentges of the Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire Department tells KUOO news firefighters were called to a residence in the 1400 block of Lakeshore Drive across from Okoboji Boats around 8:30 a.m. Hentges says some people moving into the residence had turned the natural gas on to a line that wasn’t capped, filling the house with gas.

Several nearby homes were evacuated and streets were blocked off around the perimeter of the neighborhood as a precaution. Crews with Black Hills Energy arrived and shut off the gas without incident. Firefighters remained on the scene monitoring gas levels and ventilated the home.

Hentges says no injuries were reported and people were allowed back into their homes once the gas levels in the area had dissipated.

Firefighters stood by on the scene for about two and-a-half hours.
