Natural Gas Leak Makes For Some Anxious Moments In Okoboji

March 26, 2026

(Okoboji)– There were some tense moments earlier today (Thurs.) in a neighborhood in Okoboji. Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire Chief Chris Yungbluth tells KUOO news they were called to the 2100 block of Lakeshore Drive around 10:00 am…

“Upon arrival there was some construction occurring there and in the construction they actually struck one of the mains. Black Hills Energy was on the scene and had to bypass it, so we just got released from the scene after they got the gas stopped. Had to evacuate some construction workers otherwise no one else was affected and no injuries from it.”

Yungbluth says they didn’t have to worry about traffic…

“Actually the road had already been shut down for the construction so. It occurred right in that same area and we expect probably with this that that’s going to delay the shut down so Lakeshore Drive right there in the 2100 block will probably be shut down until next week, early next week, some time.”

Yungbluth says they were on the scene about three hours.
