National Weather Service: Blizzard Conditions Possible Thursday Into Friday

March 15, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The National Weather Service says we should prepare for the possibility of a blizzard that will likely impact the region Thursday into early Friday.

A winter storm watch is in effect for the region from late tonight (Wed.) through Friday morning. Forecasters say precipitation will start already late tonight (Wed.) in the form of drizzle or freezing drizzle with a transition to all snow around mid-morning or so Thursday. Snow will continue through the rest of the day and forecasters say it could become heavy at times in the afternoon. Snow will continue into the overnight hours Thursday before ending early Friday, with 4 to 6 inches of accumulation possible. North wind gusting to 50 mph will kick in by late in the day Thursday continuing into Friday with considerable blowing and drifting snow and blizzard conditions likely. The National Weather Service says that will likely make for very difficult travel conditions.

Very cold air will follow the system with highs only in the teens Friday and Saturday and overnight lows in the single digits. Wind chills will be well below zero. Those with travel plans Thursday and Friday should stay up to date with later forecasts.
