More Snow, Followed By Bitter Cold, To Impact The Region

January 27, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Undated)– Another winter storm will impact the region late tonight (Friday) into the day Saturday. Locally, 3 to 6 inches of snow is likely here in the Iowa Great Lakes, with heavier amounts to our south. A winter weather advisory goes into affect for most of the region, including the Iowa Great Lakes, at 9:00 pm this (Fri.) evening. It will continue until 6:00 pm Saturday. Further south, a winter storm warning will be in effect for areas roughly along and south of Highway 10 for that same period. This includes places like Sioux City, Le Mars, Storm Lake and Ida Grove. Amounts in those locations could range from 5 to 8 inches. Travel in some areas could become difficult, with areas of blowing and drifting snow also likely developing.

An arctic airmass will plunge southward from the north pole region of Alaska and will encompass a large part of the north central U.S. behind the storm. This arctic outbreak will be a prolonged event, lasting through the upcoming week. Daytime highs will struggle to get above zero with overnight lows going well below zero.

Officials say it’s important for anyone who plans to venture out to be properly dressed for the conditions. Forecasters say wind chills could be as low as -30 degrees as we head into the weekend and next week. They say frostbite can occur to exposed skin very quickly in conditions like that.
