More Bird Flu Detected In NW Iowa, This Time In Palo Alto County

December 08, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Des Moines)– The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship says another case of bird flu has been detected in northwest Iowa. The agency says a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza was discovered in a commercial turkey flock in Palo Alto county. It’s Iowa’s 5th detection of H5N1 HPAI within poultry in 2024.

Governor Kim Reynolds has issued a disaster proclamation of Palo Alto county, allowing state resources to assist in tracking and monitoring, rapid detection, containment, disposal and disinfection. It also waives regulatory provisions for commercial vehicles responding to affected sites. It’s in effect through January 7th, 2025.

A case of bird flu was also detected this past Friday in a flock of commercial layer chickens in Sioux county. A disaster proclamation is also in effect for that county through January 7th, 2025.
