Mishap Exposes Worker To Potentially Hazardous Gas

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A maintenance worker at a lakes area resort had to be hospitalized when some hydrochloric acid and chlorine were accidentally mixed together in a container in a maintenance building.

Spirit Lake Fire Chief David Kollasch tells KUOO news firefighters were called to Cutty’s around 8:30 a.m. He says the worker was exposed to a potentially hazardous gas that’s created when the two substances are mixed together. The name and condition of the worker who was taken to Lakes Regional Healthcare weren’t immediately available.

Kollasch says firefighters equipped with special protective gear and breathing aparatus moved the container outside and sealed it. A hole was then cut into one side of the building for ventilation.

Kollasch says no evacuations were required as the gas was self-contained.

The Spirit Lake Fire Department was on the scene about an hour.
