Minor Injuries Reported In Three-Vehicle Collision At The North Y In Spencer

September 03, 2025

(Spencer)– Two people were injured last Thursday in a three-vehicle collision at the north junction of Highways 71 and 18, or the North Y in Spencer.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says 26-year-old Roberta Garcia of Spirit Lake was driving a 2016 Subaru southbound on Highway 71 and 81-year-old Ruth Hoekstra of Ocheyedan was driving a 2006 Buick. A press release says Hoekstra had stopped at a stop sign and was facing west toward Highway 18 when she pulled into the path of the vehicle driven by Garcia resulting in a collision. Garcia’s vehicle then slid into a 2024 Dodge Ram driven by 31-year-old Cole Mace of Spencer.

Garcia and Hoekstra were taken to Spencer Hospital.

Hoekstra was cited for failure to obey a stop sign and yield the right-of-way.

The vehicles driven by Hoekstra and Garcia were totaled; minor damage was reported to the one driven by Mace.
