(Milford)– An abandoned water service line made of galvanized steel discovered recently during work on 13th Street was a topic of discussion Friday during a joint meeting of the Milford City Council and Milford Municipal Utilities.
Originally it was decided to simply cap the line and disconnect it from the main. The contractor on the 13th Street project said they could remove the line now, while their equipment is there, for an additional $28,000. Brad Willemsen, Director of Milford Municipal Utilities, says another contractor told him they could remove it at a later date for $13,000 or less. Instead of digging the street up again in the future, it was decided to get it removed now, with the additional cost being covered by MMU.
Mayor Steve Anderson expressed his frustration over the matter, saying it should have been caught much earlier. Willemsen says they didn’t know the galvanized line was there until crews started digging.
