(Milford)– Plans for a new fire station in Milford are headed back to the drawing board.
Only one bid was received on the project at a recent bid letting, and it was considerably higher than the 3.185 million dollar bond issue voters approved for the project.
Fire Chief Jim Carpenter was at Monday’s city council meeting, requesting the council get new bids as soon as possible, with possible deducts added to the plan.
Some expressed concern over that, saying they’re worried the project could get scaled back too far. Mayor Virg Wahlman cautioned that the project needs “to be done right the first time”, adding he feels the partners in the project agree.
Councilman Mike Anderson said any perception the council decided to do away with some key components of the facility is false.
After further discussion, it was the concenus of the council and Fire Department members to have the architect draw up plans for a facility without a second level. The second story was originally proposed as future living quarters for firefighters. They’re hoping deleting the second story will bring the project back within budget. But some are concerned that when it comes time for another bid letting that the added cost of inflation could once again push the project over budget…even without the second story.
