Milford Fire Dept. Holding Its Annual Pancake Breakfast Sunday, August 31st

August 25, 2025

(Milford)– The Milford Fire Department holds its annual pancake and sausage breakfast this coming Sunday, August 31st
at the fire station. Firefighter Jason Simpson says it’s a major fundraiser for the department…

“We start serving at 8:00 and go through noon. Of course the pancakes that we’re serving are the official pancakes of the University of Okoboji which is the hot, fresh Crusty Cream Pancakes along with some sausage patties, a cup of coffee and some juice. The Milford Boy Scouts will be providing the pancakes and serving them and helping out the fire department.”

Admission is by a freewill donation with proceeds going to help update equipment…

“The Milford Fire Department just did an extensive E-V training, which is an electrical vehicle extrication and fire training. We did that two weeks ago. Had a group come in and they spent all day with us showing us videos, giving us techniques, and then we actually went out to Boji Tow and we actually tipped some cars over, we caught some cars on fire, we did some cuts, and we found out there’s some equipment that would be beneficial. Especially here in the the lakes region. The more you look around, there’s beginning to be more and more electric vehicles on the road and that is something as a fire department you need to be prepared because you just never know what you’re going to come across when you come across an accident and it may be an electric vehicle involved with that.”

Simpson adds there’s a significant difference in battling a fire in an electric vehicle…

“They are very hard to put out. They take a lot of water to put them out, where a gas or diesel vehicle we can usually get that under control fairly quickly where a battery car it’s just really hard because the batteries are contained under the car and you have to elevate the car on its side and essentially cool the batteries down until they eventually run out of thermal energy.”

Simpson says they’re looking at purchasing a special device known as a turtle shell that goes under the vehicle and sprays water up from all angles, along with a large fire suppression blanket.

Again the Milford Fire Department’s annual pancake and sausage breakfast is this Sunday, August 31st, from 8:00 am until 12 Noon at the fire station in Milford.
