Milford Airport Commission Approves Study Recommendation

June 24, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Milford)– The Milford Airport Commission this (Friday) afternoon voted to recommend the city council authorize a study of the airport. Chairman Chris Stein tells KUOO news it would be conducted by Jerry Searle, an Aviation Planner with the HDR consulting firm in Des Moines. Stein says Searle conducted a similar study that resulted in the merger of the Orange City and Sioux Center airports…

“So given the questions and things that’s came up we’ve talked to him to provide the city with some insight on how to move forward if changes are made. We’ve been in discussions with him for awhile so he’s going to do some background look and try to forecast the future needs of the area and what kind of usage a airport, the traffic, if Milford stays the same or if it were to be moved or if some day it were combined with Spirit Lake, and kind of look at the economic impact of what that would be.”

Stein says that particular study would likely take three months to complete. He says depending upon the outcome of that, a second study could be considered that would focus more on what may be entailed in the future.

The Milford city council will consider the commission’s recommendation at their meeting this coming Monday evening (June 27th).

The “Spirit of Okoboji” group has expressed interest in purchasing the Milford Airport for it’s proposed “Milford Campus” project. It would consist of a housing development along with an indoor and outdoor athletic complex and other amenities.
