May 4th Event To Highlight Various Attractions In Clay County

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Area residents are being urged to take advantage of a special event this spring designed to make more people aware of the various attractions in Clay county. Jill Toft, Tourism Director with the Clay County Convention and Visitors Bureau tells KUOO news they’ll be holding a “Cruisin’ Clay” tour Saturday, May 4th from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m…(click here for comment.) “We are just trying to build some excitement about a lot of attractions we have right here in Clay county, and what better way to do that than maybe just get on a bus and drive around check some of them out. I’ve been partnering with Farmers Bank. Debbie Sundahl there was a great help and helped me get a few details organized with the motor coach transportation. They also helped advertise in their Heritage Club newsletter. We organized the sites and where to go and picked the date for Saturday, May 4th.”

Toft says the itinerary includes stops at a lot of hidden treasures that many may not even know exist…(click here for comment.) “We’re going to start right here in Spencer at the Clay County Heritage Center and then we’re going to head north and drive on the Langdon blacktop over to the Lost Island Nature Center and visit with a naturalist over there. Then we’re going to head south and do a little drive through Gillette Grove and Deadhorse Canyon; we’re going to head over to Peterson on Highway 10 and take in the byway and the beautiful scenic drive down there and have lunch at the Prairie Heritage Center, they have the buffalo down there and another naturalist will visit with us while we’re having lunch. We’re going to stop in Peterson and see two or three sites I’ve got confirmed down there; and then head north to Everly to visit the schoolhouse there and Marilyn Myer will have her book there for sale and visit with us about the county schoolhouses; then we’ll conclude at Scharnberg Park and see the cabins and kind of check out the new things they have going on and then return back to Spencer.”

Toft says they’re hoping to make the tour an annual event…(click here for comment.) “We’re just trying to build some interest and let people know that we have a lot to see right here in our own back yards, a lot of hidden treasures as I like to call it. It’s a pretty inexpensive way to get out and explore the county and see what we have to offer.”

The cost is $25 per person, which must be paid at the time of registration. To sign up, call (712) 580-8687 or stop by the Clay County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau office located in the Clay County Heritage Center at 7 Grand Avenue in Spencer. The cost covers the cost of the bus transportation and admission to the various sites, along with a lunch, snacks and a guide service.
