(Spirit Lake)– Proposed maps depicting newly drawn districts for the board of supervisors and voting precincts in Dickinson county drew quite a few comments but no opposition at a public hearing this (Tuesday) morning.
Counties are required to go through the process every 10 years following the latest census.
Owen Primavera of Okoboji is one of seven people who served on the county’s temporary re-districting committee. He tells KUOO news the new maps represent some big changes in supervisor districts…Click here to hear mp3 file
Primavera says the seven member committee, which was appointed by the supervisors and consists of representatives from both political parties scattered from throughout the county, voted unanimously to recommend the proposed map.
He says they had to meet some tough guidelines from the state and that what would typically be a very complicated process was made much easier thanks to some computer software…Click here to hear mp3 file

Reiman says she’ll hold off on making any changes in voting locations until the new maps are officially approved by the state…Click here to hear mp3 file
Reiman says she’s hopeful the state will approve the new maps, adding she feels they meet all the requirements.
The new maps go into effect January 15th, 2012.
Here’s a rundown on the areas covered by the various supervisor districts:
DISTRICT 1
All of Spirit Lake township, all of the north precinct of the city of Spirit Lake; all of the west precinct of the city of Spirit Lake (including the city of Orleans).
DISTRICT 2
All of Superior township, all of Richland Township, all of Lloyd Township, all of Center Grove rural township (with the exception of East Okoboji Beach, East Oaks Estates and Arthur Heights, as well as an area south and southwest of the city of Spirit Lake.) It would also include the cities of West Okoboji and Wahpeton and a portion of Milford Township rural.
DISTRICT 3
The city of Milford, part of the rural areas of Milford Township, all of Okoboji Township (rural) with the exception of the western two sections.
DISTRICT 4
All of Silver Lake Township, all of Diamond Lake Township, all of Excelsior Township, all of rural Lakeville Township, all of Lloyd Township, the western two sections of Okoboji Township, the city of Okoboji and rural areas of Center Grove Township south and southwest of the city of Spirit Lake.
DISTRICT 5
All of Spirit Lake south precinct, rural areas to the southeast of the city of Spirit Lake, including Francis Sites and Loch Nolls, east of East Lake Okoboji including East Okoboji Beach, Arthur Heights and East Oaks Estates.
