Man Arrested On Assault/Weapons Charges Following Stand-Off At A Jackson Motel

March 20, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Jackson, Mn.)– A man accused of assaulting a person at a motel in Jackson this (Wed.) morning was arrested following a stand-off with authorities.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called to the Jackson Inn Motel, formerly the Econo Lodge, in Jackson a little after 9:30 am. A caller reported being assaulted in the lobby area and that the suspect was armed with a pistol that was used to strike the victim, but the caller was uncertain as to whether it was a real pistol or an airsoft. The suspect retreated to some living quarters on the second floor following the incident.

Deputies arrived within minutes and entered the lobby where they noticed the suspect standing at the top of a stairwell holding a pistol. Deputies retreated and began to evacuate tenants from rooms, along with the victim, who authorities say was visibly injured but declined treatment. The HEAT Tactical Team, which happened to be in Jackson for training, was then called to the scene.

Authorities at that point began negotiating with the 28-year-old male suspect. After about two hours of talks with the suspect, he surrendered around 12:10 pm. The suspect was examined on the scene by paramedics. After being cleared he was then arrested and charged with probable cause 2nd degree assault with a deadly weapon and domestic assault…strangulation. A pistol was also recovered at the scene. While a press release doesn’t mention a name of a suspect, an online roster of inmates at the Jackson county jail shows Aaron Michael Johnson was arrested and booked into jail Wednesday on the charges.

The motel was turned back over to management and tenants were allowed to return.

The Lakefield Police Department assisted on the scene.
