Look For Additional Law Enforcement On The Roads In Coming Days

August 31, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Undated)– The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is partnering with law enforcement agencies across Iowa in an effort to reduce impaired driving. A “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is underway through September 4th.

There were 40 traffic fatalities during the final weeks of summer in Iowa last year. 30 percent of those fatalities were alcohol/drug related. Trooper Kevin Krull says there are way too many fatalities on the roads…

“We’re out they trying to do our part and that’s where we’ve got to just keep reminding people to do their report, you know. I’m in my 30th year of law enforcement this year and when I talk to the drivers and students I talk about how, you know, I prefer the types of education I do now because education and enforcement are a two-pronged attack, trying to get speeding down and get people doing the right thing. And I’d much rather do like the radio shows and group setting talks rather than the window-side one-on-one education that I’ve done in the past for so many years and still do, but it’s more enjoyable to get those numbers out there and get people’s realization to the dangers of driving if you’re not paying attention.”

Krull says the latest available figures are that 37 people per day in the U.S lose their lives to a drunk driver. He says troopers and other law enforcement officers are out in force through Labor Day with a special focus on removing impaired and distracted drivers from roads.
