Local Support Group Offers Assistance To Caregivers Of Those Suffering From Alzheimer’s/Dementia

September 23, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– If you are a caregiver for someone suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, or know of someone who is, a group is available locally to offer support. Milt Nolting of Spirit Lake heads it up. He says while it’s been in existence since about 2019, not everyone may be familiar with the group…

“Well the support group meets every Wednesday at 10:00 at the First Presbyterian Church. We typically kind of have a free time where we talk about where we are, most people who are caregivers, and we may have a short program, and then we will discuss that and talk about our own situations.”

Nolting says they’ll be putting on a special event in October, called a Memory Cafe”…

“Well it’s a time and a place that’s supportive and kind of a social time more than anything else for people that are caregivers and also the people that they’re caring for. They can sit down and have a cup of coffee and refreshments and some entertainment and just enjoy themselves and get a chance to visit with others that are in the same situation.”

The Memory Cafe will be held Tuesday, October 15th from 10:00 until 11:30 that morning at the First Presbyterian Church in Spirit Lake. It will feature refreshments, a networking opportunity, and musical entertainment featuring “Boji Strummers”. It’s free to attend. Nolting says they’re looking at making the Memory Cafe a monthly event.

More information about the Alzheimer’s Support Group and the Memory Cafe is available by contacting the First Presbyterian Church in Spirit Lake.
