(Lakefield, Mn.)– The soybean harvest has now kicked into high gear. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services says there’s been a big increase in combining operations just over the past few days…
“This warm weather has just made these soybeans that have maybe planted just a little bit later, they’re mature and ready to go. In fact, it’s kind of a race to get them done because a lot of these beans are getting down to nine percent or even a little bit less, so they’re dry and the combines are really rolling. We just really knocked out a lot of soybeans this last weekend and so it’s progressing nicely and I would expect by this weekend it’ll just be these later planted beans that will be left to harvest.”
Nesseth says yields, for the most part, continue to be disappointing. He says given the favorable weather, producers will likely jump to corn once they’re done with beans…
“The reports I’ve had on some corn that’s just started to get taken out is that some of that 100-day corn is down to 15, 16, 17 percent moisture. Standability is pretty good, but yeah, they’ll go right after the corn. This past couple three or four days it’s just like we’ve had a big corn dryer out there, Mother Nature has just really dried this corn down pretty fast, maybe a little too fast in some cases. We like to have that little slower maturation with the corn to get some good test weight and some extra yield. That may hurt us a little bit but we’re certainly going to save some money on propane and drying cost.”
Nesseth says corn yields will also likely be highly variable.
