Local “Safe Routes To School” Project Awarded Funding

(Spencer)– A project in Spencer is one of 17 in the state awarded funding by the Iowa Transportation Commission for “Safe Routes To School” projects.

A sidewalk improvement program in Spencer has been awarded $79,475.

A total of 1.7 million dollars was awarded statewide for various “Safe Routes To School” projects.

The program was created with federal transportation funds in 2005 with the purpose of increasing the number of children walking and bicycling to school.

Funding is available to cities, counties, state agencies, non-profit organizations and public and private schools through an annual application-based program.
