(Spirit Lake)—The owner/operator of a Spirit Lake recycling firm says he’s looking to get out of the business and plans to turn his operation over to another firm.
Mike Hawn of H & H Recycling told the Dickinson county board of supervisors today (Tues.) he’s looking to get out of the business after 20 plus years. He’s proposing to turn his operation over to Shamrock Recycling of Emmetsburg.
In addition to the county, the cities of Spirit Lake and West Okoboji currently contract with H & H Recycling.
Mike Flannegan of Shamrock Recycling was at today’s (Tues.) meeting and said he would continue to honor the county’s existing contract until June 1st. After that, he said some relatively small incremental increases would be needed, along with five-year commitments from the contracting entities. Flannegan says he would like to build a $200,000 facility locally, and that the long-term commitments are needed in order for that too be feasible.
The supervisors took no action on the matter today (Tues.). Flannegan told them he would like a response by early March.
Hawn and Flannegan were also at Tuesday’s Spirit Lake city council meeting. The council took no action on the matter, referring it to committee.
