Local Post Offices Under Review For Possible Closure

November 22, 2014

(Des Moines)– The Postal Service is considering closing hundreds of small post offices nationwide as the financially-strapped agency looks for ways to save money.

The postal service announced today (Tuesday) it’s reviewing 3,700 of its 32,000 offices nationwide. Most are in small town and have low volumes of business.

Local post offices under review in northwest Iowa include Archer, Ayrshire, Curlew, Cylinder, Dolliver, Gillett Grove, Linn Grove, Marathon, Superior, Truesdale, Wallingford and Webb.

Post offices under review in our area in southwest Minnesota include Alpha, Avoca, Beaver Creek, Bigelow, Darfur, Granada, Hardwick, Iona, Magnolia and Ormsby.

Over the last four years, the Postal Service has cut its staff by 130,000 and reduced costs by $12 billion in an effort to cope with the loss of first-class mail to the internet and the drop in advertising mail caused by the recession.
