(Des Moines)– A local judge is among those who have applied to fill an upcoming vacancy on the Iowa Court of Appeals. Judge John Sandy of Spirit Lake is among the 18 applicants seeking to fill the vacancy with the pending retirement of Chief Judge Thomas Bower, effective July 1st.
The State Judicial Nominating Commission will convene tomorrow (Wed.) to interview the applicants. Judge Sandy’s interview is set for 2:20 pm. Immediately following the interviews the commission will begin deliberations to select a slate of five nominees from the group of applicants. Those names will be forwarded to the Governor who will then have 30 days in which to appoint the new judge.
Judge Sandy has served in his existing capacity in the 3-A Judicial District since being appointed by the Governor in 2021. He was an attorney prior to that.
