(Okoboji)– A longtime Spirit Lake resident who’s probably best known for his historical re-enactments and love of history is this year’s Citizen of The Years.
The Spirit Lake Noon Kiwanis Club bestowed the honor upon Jerry Fastenow at it annual Christmas party Wednesday evening at Arrowwood Resort in Okoboji.
Fastenow spends a lot of time traveling to schools throughout a five-state region presenting hands-on history lessons to students through his historical re-enactments and various artifacts he’s acquired over the years.
Fastenow, who’s 71, tells KUOO news he’s had a love of history pretty much his entire life, having worked in the construction industry in his earlier years. He says he found his love of re-enacting various historical events about 30 years ago when he met up with another local history buff, John Franklin.
Fastenow says it’s unfortunate most people take history for granted, adding if it wasn’t for history, “we wouldn’t be here today”.
In addition to his work with the schools, Fastenow was also recognized for his many years of community service…including 41 years with the Boyscouts…many of those as a leader.
He and his wife are members of Faith Evangelical Free Church.
Fastenow also helped in the reconstruction following Hurricane Katrina; he’s a former member of the Spirit Lake Board of Adjustment; served with ECHO Plus; and worked 10 years with Pony Express.
Congratulations to Jerry Fastenow, 2009 Citizen of The Years.
