Local Elections Officials Issue Reminder Regarding Absentee Ballot Requests

October 03, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– With the November election weeks away comes a reminder from local election officials. You can now make requests for absentee ballots. Jordan Moyer oversees elections at the Dickinson County Auditor’s Office. She says there’s been some confusion from some people who have received duplicate ballot request forms in the mail…

“So we had the Democratic Party and the Republican Party both send out mailings and I know that some of them are duplicates especially with no party voters, and so just a reminder that you only need to fill out one. If you have received two of them you can just go ahead and throw that second one away.”

Moyer says there have been incidents in which they’ve received duplicate requests from the same person…

“Some people are unsure of, you know, if we have gotten it, but I’m sure we have. You’re more than welcome to call our office to make sure we did receive that, but most likely we have received that. And just a reminder as well that those ballots don’t get mailed out until October 19th which is the first day that you can either absentee vote by mail or by coming into our office and voting.”

She adds they do have a system in place to ensure only one absentee ballot gets sent to the person requesting one…

“We just check our system and it shows that we do have an active absentee request that is in our system showing that we have fulfilled your request and we’re just waiting until October 19th to get that put out in the mail for you.”

Moyer has some other reminders as well for the November 8th election…

“Absentee voting does start October 19th. The last day you can vote absentee in our office is November 7th which is the day before the election. The last day that we can mail out a ballot is the 24th, so just make sure that if you do need that mailed you’re getting in that absentee request form into us before the 24th, and that form is on our website on the main page if you scroll down. Otherwise it’s underneath the Auditor’s tab under elections where you can print it out. And also I know that it does get confusing on election day, but you do need to go to your polling place on election day. You cannot vote in the Auditor’s Office on election day.”
