Local Counties Eligible For Disaster Assistance

November 22, 2014

(Washington, D.C.)– U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley announced yesterday (Thurs.) that eight Iowa counties have received a primary disaster designation and 27 others have received a contiguous disaster designation from Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack as a result of severe storms that occurred in 2010.

Locally, Sioux county is among the eight counties that were named primary disaster counties; Cherokee, Lyon, O’Brien, Osceola and Plymouth counties are among the contiguous counties.

Farm operators in both primary and contiguous counties are eligible for assistance from the Farm Service Agency including emergency loans and the Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payments Program. Producers have eight months from the date of the disaster designation to apply for emergency loan assistance.

FSA officials say each application will be considered on its own merit taking into account the extent of losses, security available and repayment ability.
