(Lakefield, Mn.)– Most of the harvest in northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota is now complete. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services of Lakefield says only about 5 to 10 percent of the corn crop is still in the field, with the soybeans completely done. He says the conditions were ideal not only for the harvest, but the growing season as a whole…
“Overall it was a year that you basically beat your APH’s on your crop insurance and you can probably build your production history on most of your farms.”
Nesseth says the rain over the past day or so has also been a good thing…
“It’s just going to kind of soften up that soil some. I know we’ve got a lot of anhydrous ammonia going on and this will certainly help seal that product. That is a product of choice that we recommend for fall applied N, and a lot of fertilizer is being applied. Soil temperatures have cooled off so that’s good news, and still a lot of manure being applied. Prior to this rain we had a lot of cornstalks being baled and so that’s good, because you like to get that up in dry conditions. And I think most of that work has been done. You just look back and say it’s been about a perfect year with rainfall and timeliness and just a good fall to get the crop out in a real timely fashion.”
Nesseth adds the rain will also help replenish subsoil moisture but he says more is going to be needed before the ground freezes.
